Xiaomi surpassed Apple as the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturer in Q2, 2021, according to a new analysis from Canalys. Also, the research firm reported that as vaccines rolled out around the world and the new normal for economies and citizens started to take shape, global smartphone shipments increased 12 percent during the said quarter.
All of the top 5 mobile makers recorded growth during the said quarter, but Xiaomi has the biggest one at 83 percent to capture 17 percent of the market share for the number 2 spot for the first time ever.
Samsung is still on top with 19 percent of the pie and 15 percent growth, but if the trend continues, Xiaomi will eventually beat Samsung as well.
Apple dropped to number 3 with 14 percent and 1 percent growth. OPPO and vivo both have 10 percent. OPPO grew by 28 percent while Vivo grew by 27 percent annually.
“Xiaomi is growing its overseas business rapidly. For example, its shipments increased more than 300% in Latin America, 150% in Africa, and 50% in Western Europe. And as it grows, it evolves. It is now transforming its business model from challenger to incumbent, with initiatives such as channel partner consolidation and more careful management of older stock in the open market. It is still largely skewed toward the mass market, however, and compared with Samsung and Apple, its average selling price is around 40% and 75% cheaper respectively. So a major priority for Xiaomi this year is to grow sales of its high-end devices, such as the Mi 11 Ultra. But it will be a tough battle, with Oppo and Vivo sharing the same objective, and both willing to spend big on above-the-line marketing to build their brands in a way that Xiaomi is not. All vendors are fighting hard to secure component supply amid global shortages, but Xiaomi already has its sights set on the next prize: displacing Samsung to become the world’s largest vendor.”

Canalys noted that this is due to the company’s rapidly growing overseas business. One crazy number is Xiaomi’s shipments increased by more than 300 percent in Latin America.
