Nanjing: New virus outbreak worst since Wuhan, say Chinese state media

The Covid epidemic, first detected in the Chinese city of Nanjing, has spread to five provinces and Beijing, with state media calling it the most contagious disease since Wuhan.

Virus was first detected in city’s busy airport and now almost 200 people infected since then.

According to the local media reports, all flights from Nanjing airport will be suspended till august 11th.

Officials now already testing the city widely, all the 9.3 million people including the visitors will be tested.

Social media posts show how long lines of people lining up, and the officials have reportedly advised people to wear masks, stand 1 meter apart, and not talk while waiting.

According to the authorities, a highly contagious delta variant of the virus was caused by these infections.

Health official in Nanjing Ding Jie said to reporters that the cases are linked with the cleaners who worked on the flight from Russia that arrived at the city on the 10th of July. According to the report from Xinhua News, the workers didn’t follow strict hygiene measures.

According to the testing results, the virus now has been spread to at a minimum to 13 cities including the capital Beijing.

Nevertheless, Experts cited by the Global Times said they believed the outbreak was still in an early stage and can be controlled.
