Before this Samsung used to offer either monthly or quarterly security updates for at least 2 years of a device’s life span, and the frequency of security updates depends on the device itself. More premium phones like Galaxy S lineup or Galaxy note line up get monthly updates and other budget friendly phones like Galaxy A lineup and other galaxy phones get quarterly updates. And Samsung also dropped some of their Premium phones like Galaxy S8 to quarterly security updates instead of monthly security updates.

And these are not Android OS updates they are only security updates. And recently Samsung also promised 3 versions of Android OS updates for their flagships.

Google on the other hand only promises “at least 3 years” of security updates for Its pixel phones. And there are fewer models of pixel phones than 40 plus models of Galaxy phones and tablets that Samsung is promising to give 4 years of security update

This announcement from Samsung is not the same agreement that Google and Qualcomm made in December to ensure phones with the new Qualcomm chips will support both four generations of Android OS updates and four years of security updates. While the overall goals are similar, this announcement was only for devices that have this year’s New Snapdragon 888 chip and newer, while Samsung is promising to give security updates to its devices as old as 2019
